Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church.
First Alliance belongs to a movement that began in the late 19th century that was used by God to kindle deep love for Jesus and to send missionaries around the world to bring his good news to places where it had not yet been heard. That movement has since become a denomination and is known today as the Christian & Missionary Alliance.
First Alliance traces its parentage back to the beginning of the Christian & Missionary Alliance at the end of the 19th century. It came to its present location in Scarborough in 1977 and has watched the city change drastically since. Scarborough, it seems, has now grown up around the church and become one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Canada.
Although the landscape of Scarborough has changed drastically, the mandate of the Gospel has not. God has placed the people of First Alliance in such a time and place as this to be witnesses to Jesus and the good news of the redemption available in him. We do this through biblical proclamation and tangible care for our neighbourhood.
We are intent on following Jesus - worshiping him and being on mission for him in our neighbourhood, city and world. We're committed to being people who walk in a vital relationship with God and who are given over to living for him wherever he has placed us.
We have many cultures, language groups, and generations part of our church family and we believe that this is a key part of how Jesus gathers diverse people around himself and his gospel.
We value spending time in the Bible, personally and together, to continue to have the biblical story shape us and define our lives and our view of the world.
We value worshiping God personally and together, through song, prayer, the Lord's Supper, fellowship, but even more in how we live our lives and represent God in the world.
We value showing hospitality to everyone regardless of their ethnicity, class, age, or background, recognizing that just as God has welcomed us to himself through Jesus, we are called to do the same.
We value being witnesses to Jesus and his good news in the words we speak and in the things we do.
We value seeing the restoration and wholeness which God intends for all creation to continue to break into our experience as we pray for God's kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.
We value developing personal and corporate rhythms that are sustainable and enable us to flourish as followers of Jesus in every area of life.
As we seek to love people and make disciples of Jesus, we value practices that can be easily replicated and passed on so that everyone can become a mature follower of Jesus who can point others to Jesus as well.
Oh God our Father, make us a body of people, so transformed and empowered by your Word & Spirit that our communities, our nation and our world would see and know Jesus Christ as the way, the truth and the life.
What does this mean for you? Most importantly, you're always welcome at First Alliance. Wherever you're at in your journey, you'll always be accepted here.
